



Cherry blossoms in Houkouen have been selected as one of the One Hundred Best Sites for Cherry Blossoms in Japan. They flourish from early to mid April surrounding Nagahama Castle.
There are 800 ‘someiyoshino’ (a variety of cherry tree) and the night view of cherry blossoms is also very attractive.

Soujiji, known for its large number of important cultural properties including the statue of Kannon (Goddess of Mercy), is covered by peonies from wall to wall from the end of April to mid May. There are 80 different varieties and 1,000 roots of peonies.

Shanain is a temple founded by Kukai (a Buddhist priest) in early Heian era, late 9th century. The delicate beauty of cotton roses, decorating the early autumn season, is attractive. The season for cotton roses is from late July to September.

The atmosphere of Ohmi in early autumn can be enjoyed at the Hagi Matsuri in Jinshouji. There are 1,500 roots and 20,000 Hagi bushes which are grown in clumps within the temple. The special exhibition of temple’s treasures, including a national treasure Kingin Tohou Sougemon Sukashibori Keko (flower basket motif in lace worked arabesque carving in gold and silver) is held simultaneously.

Kohouan is the family temple of Enshuu Kobori. Its garden is designated as a prefecutural scenic beauty and is known for the best spot in Kohoku for autumn leaves.

Bonbai is the Japanese apricot tree in bonsai style.
This exhibition started from 1952 when late Shichizo Takayama donated his Bonbai to Nagahama City. Early spring comes with this exhibition. A 400 year old tree and a 3 meter tall tree are among the exhibits and this exhibition has been referred as the No. 1 Bonbai exhibition historically and scale wise.

This bonsai festival for asebi is held in the most noted temple in Nagahama, Daitsuji. Asebi flowers are in lovely red, pink and white and bloom in clusters. The exhibition of Asebi in bonsai style is known, nationwide, as very rare.
